Challenge: Create a truly authentic hand-painted paper sign font based on the masters of sign painting from the first half of the 20th century. Through the use of contextual alternates, ligatures, and opentype stylistic alternates the font would have the same idiosyncrasies of the originals that the digital versions are based on.
Outcome: During the huge work slowdown of the pandemic, I pivoted from designing for clients to creating typefaces and setting up a small independent type foundry.
One of the fonts that I could never find available in digital form was a truly authentic paper sign painter font used primarily in grocery stores from the 1940s through 1970s.
